We are featuring Trinity Cross for our June Maker of the Month! Many of you have seen Field Day's clothing line at local art fairs, festivals, and on many beautiful local ladies around the Bay Area. Trinity (pictured above) is one of our favorite local designers and is constantly coming out with new designs and products that are locally produced,, well designed to fit many different body types, and have sustainability in mind. Her dresses can be dressed up for a wedding or can be worn with converse for a weekend bike ride, now that's my kind of dress! We interviewed Trinity to find out what goes into a Field Day garment and how she started out as a designer. Read on for more info about Trinity and Field Day's three year anniversary bash!
How long have you been sewing? How long have you had your business? Tell us the history of how you got started to where you are now.
I started sewing as an angsty teenager that couldn't find anything I wanted to wear. It became a political move for me too. Being exposed to the suffering and inequality that comes from sweat shop labor. I would hunt for over-sized amazing fabrics from thrift stores and make a-one-of-a-kind piece for myself that I felt at home in. Field Day itself has been around for 11 years. Our Brick and mortar boutique Field Day & Friends has been around for coming up on 3 years. We house over 100 independent made in America makers and brands.
Tell us about your brand and what is involved in a Field Day piece?
We pride ourselves on local manufacturing and sustainable fabrics. We design, draft, sample, grade, cut, sew, & finish everything we make in Oakland, CA. We like to get creative with what we are using for our garments and try and make as little impact on our environment as possible. Field Day emerged from the desire to make timeless, impeccably crafted clothing from completely conscious materials that transcend trendy and were made to make history. We design for the women who inspire us. Women who like the feeling of earth between their fingers. Cool winter breezes and hot summer river dips. Who aren’t afraid to strike out on their own, and dress for uncharted days of spontaneous adventures.
What is your favorite piece you have ever made?
The Sheet and Bedding dress are our classic and most popular styles. They are made from vintage bed-sheets and reclaimed fabrics. They are smocked in the back for a perfect high-waist fit with some stretch so you can take a deep breath or eat a big meal and still feel comfy while looking good.
What advice would you give someone just starting out as a designer?
Slow and steady wins the race! Local manufacturing will give you a better feel for how the industry works and will allow you to have a more hands on approach for getting your items sewn and created exactly how you planned. I could not send my samples and patterns overseas and not have any kind of direct contact with our sewers.
Where do you see Field Day in 3-5 years?
Right here in Oakland with a hopefully larger team and (fingers crossed) a partner to help more with the wholesale and retail world.
What do you do for fun and what are your favorite Bay Area or California spots to hang out?
We are so lucky to have our shop just across the street from Lake Merritt. On stressful days, I love to take a stroll around the lake. The Albany bulb or "Landfill" has been an adventure spot for me and my pup since I first landed in Oakland 14 years ago. I spend a fair amount of time in my back yard garden with my bees and herbs. I've been developing a herbal based line called Forest & Fields that comes from wild-crafted and home grown herbs and that's been a ton of fun! I am always up for a hike or a dip in a crystal clear swimming hole.
