We are thrilled to be featuring Bunnycone Designs on our blog. Dhoris's jewelry is a mix of ultra modern with some fun, playful elements. I found out about Dhoris's line two years ago when her partner was in the store shopping and had on the coolest sterling silver button studs! We asked Dhoris some questions about her creative process and life in Oakland.
What inspires your creative process?
My inspiration comes from my surroundings, whether it be nature, an object, or a person. I could be driving and an idea will pop in my head and I have to immediately write it down because I have a short attention span.:) I have a notebook I keep in my purse at all times, so that I can write ideas down or sketch it out. I constantly think about jewelry 24 hours a day.
How long have you been making jewelry? How did you start out?
I've been making jewelry since 2008. Ever since I can remember, I've always made things and I was always curious about how things were made. When I was 8, I crocheted a dress for my Cabbage Patch doll, though I'd never made a crochet dress before and somehow figured it out! I took art classes all throughout high school and always wanted to go to art school, but didn't have the money. And when I finally did, I went to school and got my degree in Graphic Design. Fast forward to 2008.... My first Etsy shop where I was selling crocheted and knitted accessories. My transition into jewelry happened by accident! I'm the type of person that always wants to reinvent things. I had a set of old bangle bracelets, the kind that are thin wires with different textures, I hadn't worn them in years and thought it was a waste to just toss them. So I took a pair of pliers and thought to myself, I can make earrings out of these! I did and I took them to the office and everyone loved them and wanted to buy a pair. After that, I wanted to learn everything I could about making jewelry, so I taught myself how to work with metals and soldering. There is still so much for me to learn, but I hope everyone loves my jewelry as much as I do.
Describe your current line and process for making jewelry.
My current line is the "Ardor Collection" created for Valentine's Day. It's not all hearts and roses, like most people would think. The design is minimal and has a lot of curves and circles. It's simple and elegant. I love to mix sterling silver with brass or copper. Most of the time I have already sketched out a design, but for this line, it came out when I was making inventory. I make my own ear wires, clamps and sometimes chains. All my jewelry is soldered, mainly because I want them to last forever.
Why do you like living in Oakland?
I love living in Oakland because of it's diversity and the art scene. And of course for the weather! :)
What is your favorite spot in Oakland and why?
My favorite spot in Oakland is Lake Merritt. I live 2 blocks away and I love walking/running around the lake, having a picnic on a nice day, doing outdoor yoga with friends, or feeding the birds. Another spot I love is the Morcom Rose Garden, which has a fountain, turkeys, and hundreds of roses!
What do you do for fun?
I love to go hiking. I can walk for miles. I especially love hikes that lead to waterfalls I also love gardening and making things.
